Resume Keywords: How to Find Them in Any Job Posting
When a recruiter opens their ATS, they don't read every application — they search. "Registered nurse ICU Epic." "Project manager PMP agile." If your resume doesn't contain the searched terms, it doesn't appear. Finding those terms takes five minutes per posting.
The extraction method
Read the posting and highlight three things: hard skills (software, tools, methodologies), credentials (licenses, certifications, degrees), and repeated nouns — anything mentioned twice is a priority for the employer. Ignore fluff adjectives like "dynamic" and "passionate"; nobody searches for those.
Place keywords where they're true
Work each term into a real bullet: not a keyword dump, but "Charted patient care in Epic across a 32-bed unit." Include both the phrase and its acronym — "applicant tracking system (ATS)" — because you can't know which form the recruiter will type.
The exact-match rule
ATS matching is often literal. If the posting says "customer success," don't write only "client success." Mirror the posting's vocabulary even when synonyms feel natural to you.
What not to do
White-text keyword blocks, keyword lists with no context, and stuffing terms for jobs you can't actually do. The ATS gets you found; the interview still checks the claims.
