Internship Resume: How to Compete When Everyone Has the Same GPA

Updated 2026-07-15

Internship season means recruiters skim hundreds of resumes from the same schools, same majors, same GPAs. The differentiators are never the degree — they're projects, proof of initiative, and numbers where classmates have adjectives.

Order matters more than usual

For internships: Education first (with graduation date — recruiters filter by class year), then Projects, then Experience, then Skills. A strong course project outranks a summer of unrelated retail — but keep the retail; it proves you can hold a job.

Make projects read like work

Name, one-line scope, your specific contribution, the outcome. "Built a demand-forecasting model in Python on 3 years of café sales data; final accuracy 87%, presented to faculty panel." Link a GitHub or portfolio if the field expects one.

Quantify campus involvement

"Treasurer, Marketing Club" is a title. "Managed a $4,200 annual budget and grew paid membership 40%" is an achievement. Every club role hides a number — find it.

Mirror the posting

Internship ATS filters are keyword-driven like any other. If the posting says SQL, Figma, or AutoCAD and you have it, it must appear verbatim in your skills section.
