How to Write a Resume With No Experience (2026 Guide)

Updated 2026-07-15

Every professional started with an empty page. Recruiters know this — nobody expects a student to show a decade of employment. What they expect is evidence you can show up, learn, and contribute. Your job is translating what you have done into that evidence.

Lead with education

School, expected graduation, GPA if above 3.5, relevant coursework, honors. Coursework counts as experience when it produced something real: a capstone, a lab, a group project with a deliverable.

Mine your life for experience

  • School projects — treat them like jobs: what you built, with whom, the result.
  • Volunteering — organizing a food drive is logistics and teamwork.
  • Clubs and sports — captain, treasurer, editor are leadership titles.
  • Informal work — tutoring, babysitting, reselling online. Money changed hands; it's work.

Write each like a job bullet: "Tutored 4 middle-schoolers in algebra, raising their average grade from C to B+."

Summary, not objective

Two sentences about what you bring: "Reliable, fast-learning senior with 2 years of tutoring experience and strong spreadsheet skills."

Keep the format strict

One page, one column, standard headers: Contact, Summary, Education, Experience, Skills. Specific beats decorated — and that's a bar most first resumes never clear.
